It is a tragical and a frequent fairy tale fate to loose one’s shadow. It happened to Peter Pan, but luckily some helpful children volunteered to stitch it back on. One of the Danish poets, Hanns Christian Andersen’s fables, tells about a man whose shadow suddenly gets up on its own feet, travels the world and even makes a fortune. Now Andersen’s fellow countrymen from the Theatre Billedspor, well known for their picture-powerful performance art, attend to the phenomenon of the fugitive and dark follower of men in their production “Carried by Shadows”.

Inspired by the tale „The man who travelled around the world to find his own shadow“, they develop an unlimited stage wonder world out of masquerade and music, eloquence and artistry.

Lyrical, grotesque and magical; the largely improvised sound and body collages is as much related to the absurd theatre of Samuel Beckett as to the Japanese Butoh-dance – the dance of darkness, invented by the avant-garde artist Tatsumi Hijikata as a “ rebellion of the flesh”, which was supposed to make the most hidden parts of the body appear.

In “Carried by Shadows“ however, new facets of the radically poetic and excessive body art of the Billedspor artists shine through. On their trip into the night regions of our perception, they understand the body as an instrument, right down to its last fibre – to which also the furious shadow play belongs.
